Being a Missionary: Serving the Lord Among the Unreached

Updated: Feb 18, 2024

Sometimes we imagine that being a missionary among the unreached is a romantic endeavor. It is certainly hard. There is an urgency. There are people that are in need. So, it is easy to imagine the missionary to be the hero of a grand narrative; out there on exotic adventures, tireless, full of energy, and undefeatable. This image is quite far from the truth.

The reality is that missionaries are often quite tired, discouraged, on their knees, and uncertain that they can continue. There are frequent doubts, not about whether the Lord is at work, but whether they should be at work for the Lord. Perhaps, there are also times of doubt about whether what they are doing will make any difference whatsoever. The darkness is so tangible among the people they serve. The hearts are so cold. The responses are so hateful, so negative, so discouraging.

There are, however, also days where amongst the discouragement and doubts, the hand of the Lord is so clearly at work that it would take a special kind of folly to deny it. The Word of the Lord burns so deeply in their hearts that their bones will be consumed if they do not preached it. The response of a new believer so heart-touching and soul-warming that it it melt away many discouragements.

Today I received such a message. A young Afghan wrote:

While watching your videos, I could not stop myself from weeping today.

It is incredible to witness the Lord touching hearts so deeply through His Word, especially among the unreached peoples of Afghanistan. It is not easy, but it is certainly worth it.

Please pray for your missionaries, particularly those who are serving among the unreached. Please encourage us. It can be as simple as a short message and allow us to encourage you by telling you what the Lord is doing among the unreached peoples of Afghanistan.
